Young potting superstars from the local pool scene shone at the weekend when they cued up for the Surrey Youth Team at the National Intercounty Finals and potted their way to national glory by winning the National Intercounty Knockout Cup.

The Surrey Youth Pool Team, which featured Sutton potting sensations Jack Smithers and Michael Hope and Tolworth player Luke Garman, cued off against some of the best county youth teams in England and, despite narrowly losing their first match, they went on to beat teams from Bedfordshire and Warwickshire before beating the Greater Manchester Youth Team in the semi-final then beating the highly rated Bristol Youth Team 23-17 in the final.

‘It was a superb performance and everybody in the team contributed key wins at some point,’ said Surrey Youth Team manager Trevor Charlwood. ‘For many it was their first outing on the national stage and playing in front of big crowds under that sort of pressure. So to walk away with a winner’s trophy at their first attempt is a massive achievement.’ The winning Surrey Youth Team was: captain Michael Hope, Luke Garman, Ashley Acton, Jack Smithers, Tom Telford, James Charlwood, Cameron Gregory, Billy Barnett, Billy Lenihan, Charlie Lenihan, Conor Flanagan and Rhys Williams.
