Danny Kedwell reveals the lure of a plum draw against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton Athletic will ensure AFC Wimbledon treat Basingstoke Town with the utmost respect this weekend.

The Dons travel to the Blue Square South side for their FA Cup fourth qualifying round clash on Saturday with a place in the First Round Proper at stake.

And striker Kedwell insists Terry Brown’s Blue Square Premier league leaders will be taking the task seriously.

He said: “The last couple of years we have had some good nights in the FA Cup against Wycombe and Millwall and we want to better that this year.

“We have to make sure we do not underestimate Basingstoke in any way or we could be in trouble.

“A few weeks ago I said the same thing about Forest Green and we only drew with them so I think we will be prepared.

“As a player you always get excited about the FA Cup and this year is no different.

“To be honest if we get through I would not want a League Two side as I think we are already better than a lot of them, but the chance to play at the likes of Sheffield Wednesday or Charlton would be amazing.”

The striker helped his side return to the league summit with a hard-fought 1-0 win over visitors Gateshead on Saturday, a win secured by Ismail Yakubu’s second-half header.

And Kedwell says the result highlights the strides the Dons have made this campaign.

He added: “We are a lot more patient this year compared to last and the fact that we are winning so many games late on is massively important.

“It is much more of a squad game this season and we have a formation that really works for us.

“Add to that the fact that we are winning more games on the road and it is a real recipe for success.”

The 27-year-old also maintained his ever-present status in the Gateshead clash.

And Kedwell admitted his appearance record is something he holds dear.

He added: “I’m just a strong boy and I want to play football.

“There are a lot of players who if they get a little niggle do not want to get through it.

“I just try to shake little injuries off though and if I can play I will play.

“Thankfully I have not had a serious injury yet in my career and long may that be so.”
