Sutton Council has stepped in to resolve what's being labelled as a smelly problem that "won't seem to go away" by local residents.

The Sutton Guardian has been covering various odour complaints made by Beddington and Hackbridge residents over the past two weeks.

But the source of the stench still has not been identified - leaving a group of Oakmead Road residents in Beddington fuming.

Many are taking aim at the nearby Viridor Waste Management site, which has denied responsibility for the odour.

Janet Bunce said: "For the past six years, I have lived just off Beddington Lane by the tram stop, which is not far from Viridor.

"The smell has always been there, so we've complained to environmental health, Sutton Council and Viridor and nothing's ever been done."

Neighbour Pat Holmes, who has lived in the street for 20 years, said she was fed up.

She said: "It is a disgusting smell that I thought we'd dealt with for the last time last year.

"A Viridor representative came to visit us and they agreed it was a nasty, cheesy smell.

"I explained it made me want to keep my windows shut because it came up very strong when I was trying to have a meal.

"So they said they would see to it, but now it has started up again."

Fellow resident Jane Hurst said the "manure" smell had haunted her area for the past two years.

"It's so strong that you can't even sit out in the garden. We're fed up," she said, demanding the council take urgent action to fix the problem.

Colin Hall, lead councillor for the environment, confirmed the council had previously dealt with odour complaints.

He said: "We did investigate reports of a smell near the Viridor site last year and worked with the company to resolve it."

He added, while the amount of complaints had dropped off recently, the council's waste management and environmental health managers were currently setting up urgent meetings with senior management at Viridor.

"We continue to monitor the air quality in the area and there is an investigation in progress. If appropriate, we would bring enforcement action," Coun Hall said.

But Viridor Waste Management spokesman Victor Perez-Mares maintained the company had nothing to hide.

He said: "We have received a couple of additional complaints and site staff are now investigating them.

"But the Environment Agency (EA) and environmental health department have been satisfied that our plant, infrastructure and operational procedures meet the required standards.

"In addition, Viridor has adopted some further best practice measures to mitigate and, where possible, prevent any potential odours.

"This includes a comprehensive monitoring protocol, which has been discussed and agreed with the EA and environmental health, of daily checks on site and investigation of complaints."
