The sudden closure of a Stonecot pub has left everyone puzzled.

The Woodstock pub on Stonecot Hill has closed, however the ward councillor, residents and nearby traders do not know the reason why.

Stonecot councillor Tony Brett-Young said he did not know why the pub had closed. He said: “I heard the pub had closed and I've asked around to find out why, but nobody seems to know.”

A member of staff from the nearby Co-operative store, who did not want to be named, said customers were intrigued by the pub's closure.

She said: “Everyone's been talking about it and we all want to find out the truth.

"The pub has been there for a long time, it would be sad to see it remain derelict.”

A spokesman for the Scottish and Newcastle pub company, who own the Woodstock, said: “The previous owners left the pub earlier this year – the reasons why they left are private.

"The Woodstock remains temporarily closed whilst we find a new lessee to operate the business.

“We hope to do this as quickly as possible and reopen the pub for business. We'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by its closure.

“We're looking for someone who can see the pub's potential and is willing to invest in it.”
