An elderly man has suffered "serious injuries" after being hit by a car in a crash near the Spread Eagle junction in Epsom town centre.

The blue VW Golf hit the man outside the Metro Bank on Ashley Road at about 10.15am.

The man was taken as a priority to St George's Hospital. He was in a "serious condition" en route to the hospital in Tooting, according to a spokesman from the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

The service had sent three ambulances and two cars to the junction. Surrey and Sussex Ambulance sent a crew in a car.

All roads have now re-opened after Surrey Police advised there was a build-up of traffic in Epsom town centre and that Ashley Road would be closed for several hours.

"I heard a thud and a scream," said Darren Edwards, manager at Timpson locksmith and shoe repairs, at the junction.

"I went out and I saw a person on the floor."

Mr Edwards said he could not see the person on the floor too clearly because of crowds of people at the junction.

He added: "It's obviously quite serious."

From August 2015: What makes Epsom town centre junction so dangerous?

A staff member at ladies' clothes shop Basler, did not want to give their name, but said: "We've had three of four accidents there.

"You get one lot coming across and when that stops people think it's time to cross, but traffic's still coming around from both sides.

"You don't get enough time there - especially if you're a little bit infirm."

John added: "No amount of safety precautions or countdown crossings are going to help people crossing 80 to 100 yards away from the crossing.

"I feel sorry for the fella."
