A fire that devastated three garages was “moments away” from spreading to adjoining houses, according to firefighters.

Thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused, according to Surrey Police, and the block of garages in Dorking Road, Epsom was “completely and severely” destroyed.

Surrey Police have since launched an investigation into the fire at about 3am on Sunday, September 11.

A crew from Epsom fire station was initally called to reports of a car fire. But when further information suggested that a block of garages was alight, crews from Banstead, Leatherhead and Esher stations were also dispatched to the 18th century, Grade-II listed building near Epsom General Hospital.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the smoking garages to put out the fire using three hose reels, while others scaled ladders to reach the high-pitched, timber-framed roof of the converted stable block.

Firefighters were still at the scene at about 11am on Sunday, putting the last of the embers out and concluding their initial investigations.

“It was moments away from going into the house it was attached to,” a spokesman from Epsom fire station said.

“But due to the quick and hard work of the crews on scene. They managed to stop the fire spreading.

“The garages were completely, severely damaged though.”

Following an initial fire investigation, firefighters believed that the fire was of deliberate origin. Surrey Police are now appealing for witnesses.
