An Easter bunny had a lucky escape after it was rehomed after being dumped by the bins of an animal charity.

Surrey Comet:

The abandoned rabbit - named Betty Boxbun - was found in the bins in the car park of the Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF) in Randalls Road, Leatherhead last week.

Betty was found by the charity founder’s girlfriend and a volunteer at the WAF who went to pick it up when she saw it move.

She said if she had not seen it, Betty would most likely have been thrown in the back of a lorry.

The foundation does not normally take in domestic pets, but made an exception in this case.

The bunny has since found a loving home with another of the charity’s volunteers in Twickenham.

Surrey Comet:

WAF founder and CEO Simon Cowell said: “It was in a taped-up box. Someone just dumped it, knowing that we wouldn’t throw it away.

“Who would harm a rabbit? I don’t understand why someone would do that.

“We don’t take in domestic animals but we felt we owed a duty of care and one of our volunteers gave it a home."

The Wildlife Aid Foundation is currently appealing for donations and volunteers ahead of spring, which is normally its busiest period.
