A Jaguar crashed into the front of a key-cutting shop in the High Street in Ewell this morning, while shoppers were browsing the shelves.

Miraculously no-one was hurt, although the driver - a man in his eighties - was taken to Epsom Hospital as a precaution, police confirmed.

A witness said the elderly driver had suffered a blackout at the wheel.

A wall at the front of the Ram Security and Fire Solutions - which also sells fire and burglar alarms - was damaged and windows smashed by the car at about 10.30am.

Richard Wade, who works at nearby 1 Stop Data, said: "We heard the commotion from our office so we came out to offer assistance.

"This is not the first time an accident like this has happened on this same junction.

"Driver was male, pushing 80 I'd say. Apparently had a blackout.

"There was a woman on the other side of the window - opposite I think.

"A very close call. She was very shaken up, understandably.

"I hope this will get the council to sort out the road."

There were no serious injuries reported, although the store was open and customers were inside.

An employee at nearby Vox Pops International said the crash was 'very loud'.

She said: "We didn't see it but you could hear it all the way from over here.

"Then shortly afterwards we saw an ambulance arrive.

"It looked pretty scary - the shop was open at the time - and I imagine it must have been very frightening for the people inside."

Surrey Police said: "Officers attended Cheam Road in Ewell at about 10.20am this morning following reports that a vehicle had collided with the front of a shop.

"The driver, a man his 80s, reported no injuries but was taken to Epsom Hospital as a precaution.

"Significant damage was caused to the front of the shop.

"No other persons were harmed."
