An Epsom charity dedicated to empowering elderly residents is set to "cement and grow" its IT service thanks to a charitable donation.

Age Concern in Epsom and Ewell (ACEE) received £2,000, three tablet devices and an iPad from National Counties Building Society (NCBS) on UK Older People’s Day, Thursday October 2.

Through their Helping Hands – IT Made Easy service they aim to help over 55s who live locally and already own a laptop or tablet but have limited skills and want to learn more.

They currently offer one-on-one sessions as well as group sessions in the borough, and aim to expand their service to Chessington, Ashtead, Reigate and Banstead.

Chief Officer at ACEE, Dorah May Hancock, said: "Helping Hands has been going for a while now but with this sponsorship we can really cement it and help it grow.

"It can take a while for the older generation to be confident using technology which is a bit alien to them, but once they get into it the skills they can learn are just invaluable.

"It can help them in emailing, skyping and staying in touch with family and friends, whether that is here or abroad, and transforming their lives through internet shopping and internet banking."

Chief Executive at NCBS, Mark Bogard said: "Being able to make the most of the information and resources now available online is absolutely vital and we want to help improve access for our local community."
