A promising athlete spared jail this week for the oral rape of a 12-year-old girl has been put on Sex Offenders' register for five years, it has emerged.

Handing down the sentence on Adam Hulin, 19, of Hookwood Cottages, in Hurst Lane, Headley, at Guildford Crown Court on Wednesday Recorder George Lawson-Rogers QC made no mention of putting him on the register.

But the court confirmed today that he has been put on the register for five years.

This means that he must inform police within three days if he changes his address or name or passport, warn them if he plans to go abroad, and must notify them if he lives in a household where there is a child under 18.

Hulin pleaded guilty to oral rape and also to assault by penetration of the girl in Bookham in December 2012.

Mr Lawson-Rogers decided not to pursue a charge of rape by penetration of the girl, which Hulin denied, which will remain on file.

But the judge did not impose any conditions preventing Hulin from contacting the traumatised victim in the future.

During the sentencing, Mr Lawson-Rogers, who qualified as a barrister in 1969, said he did not want there to be a situation where if both parties found themselves at a party together, Hulin could be accused of having acted unlawfully.

He said: "I don’t think there is any need for a prohibited activity requirement."

Sentencing Hulin to 100 hours of unpaid work, six sessions focusing on ‘community reintegration’ and a £60 victim surcharge Mr Lawson-Rogers said: "I consider this the appropriate disposal. I certainly wouldn’t want to do anything which would prejudice his future career."

The victim's mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said her daughter has been traumatised by the sex attack and described the sentence as "absolutely disgusting".

She said: "He should have been sent to prison. He’s now free. They’ve tried to paint him as some sort of pillar of society.

"He’s got to pay for his consequences. You can’t get away with what he’s done and how he went about doing it.

"I have no faith in the legal system whatsoever."
