Before the Surbiton neighbourhood committeees rush to close the recycling centre in Raeburn Avenue because of its untidiness, may I add some information.
The assumption seems to be that users leave the centre a mess.
But, waiting across the road for a K2 bus some days ago, on a day that was dry with some wind, I watched the huge refuse lorry loading the waste from the bins.
The lorry’s mechanisms lifted the bins up high and turned them over to drop their contents into the containers.
That included the paper bins, where the top of the bins were uncovered.
As the paper dropped, it was caught by the wind, to drift in quantity over the whole site and the paper on the lorry had no closure, so it too was picked up by the wind.
The paper strewn over the site was not picked up by the driver and his colleague, who drove away, leaving the site a mess.
So, before closing the amenity site, would the committee please first consider how the collection system could be more efficient?
