A huge fire destroyed a school swimming pool and gym complex on Friday night.

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours at City of London Freemen's School in Ashtead Park.

An Epsom firefighter said the brigade spent five hours at the scene and that an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

A statement on the school's website said: "A fire broke out in the school swimming pool after 10.00pm on Friday evening, January 3.

"Surrey Fire Service attended and although the fire destroyed the swimming pool, they were able to prevent the fire spreading to the other buildings.

Your Local Guardian:

"No one was in the pool at the time of the fire and no one has been injured. At the present time, there is no indication as to the cause of the fire and Surrey Fire Service are investigating."

Your Local Guardian:

The school is open as usual today. The school website said a tree which blocked the approach to the school on Park Lane has now been cleared.

Leatherhead and Chertsey fire brigades also attended the fire at the independent school, which counts comedian and actor Warwick Davis and Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield.
