A £90,000 roadworks scheme aims to improve life for drivers and pedestrians alike - but there may be disruption as the work takes place.
Sutton Council is beginning work in Butter Hill, Carshalton, on Monday. The scheme will take up to seven weeks to complete and should make the road easier to use.
The council says problems are caused by the road and the pavement both being too narrow and worsened by its proximity to the A232 and the A237.
Drivers sometimes mount the kerbs to avoid other cars and this frightens pedestrians.
During the various stages of the work the entry at the Caledon Road will be reduced to discourage motorists from driving through the no entry end, a pedestrian crossing will be installed near a bus stop, new crossings and tactile paving will be installed, footpaths will be widened and a traffic priority system will be implemented along Butter Hill west of Caledon Road and east of Leechcroft Avenue.
During the first phase of the work, Leechcroft Road will be closed for two to three weeks with diversions in place.
Butter Hill will operate with temporary traffic lights during that period.
The second phase, lasting three to four weeks, involves safety improvements to the junction with the A237.
