Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has given nearly £100,000 to various community projects from a new fund aiming to enhance the county's safety.

Kevin Hurley has handed over £97,000 to eight projects from the PCC’s community safety fund, which he set up to offer direct financial support to projects and initiatives in the county.

He said: "Surrey is blessed with many fantastic groups and individuals with great ideas for making things better in our county.

"By not ignoring problems and looking to do something positive about them, they embody the zero-tolerance ethos.

"With the community safety fund I can support their ideas and help make them a reality.

"These projects will make a real difference, supporting victims, protecting our children and young people, reclaiming public spaces and helping solve community disputes."

The projects benefiting from the funding are:

  • An independent sexual violence advisor for the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre;
  • Surrey Fire and Rescue’s youth engagement and Safe Drive Stay Alive schemes;
  • An online social media law and ethics course at Eagle Radio;
  • The Redhill Youth Festival;
  • Training and development at Mediation North Surrey;
  • A clean-up of Walton Leigh recreation ground; and a youth conference educating 14 to 19-year-olds on anti-social behaviour, personal safety, alcohol and drugs.
