An illegal gypsy and travellers camp which has pitched up next to Leatherhead’s leisure centre has been given two weeks to move on.
The camp, consisting of 20 caravans and families, is located in the field next to the leisure centre’s car park, situated on Guidlford Road, Leatherhead.
Councillor Chris Townsend, leader of Mole Valley Council said it would "tolerate their presence" at the site for two weeks - an order which took effect on Friday, June 7.
He said: "Officers from Mole Valley Council visited the site to assess the situation last week as part of its procedure for dealing with unauthorised encampments.
"A number of pregnant women and children were present and it is understood that many are en route to a funeral.
"After careful consideration of the welfare of those at the encampment, and in conjunction with colleagues at Surrey Police, the council has decided to tolerate their presence at this site for a period of no longer than two weeks with effect from 7 June 2013.
"Some specific conditions have been put in place as part of the agreement to allow them to stay, and the situation will be carefully monitored."
