A suspected fire at Epsom Hospital this morning was confirmed as a false alarm - brought about by smoke from a boiler room - after an evacuation was carried out today.

A spokesperson for the hospital also said no inpatients were evacuated - although it remains unclear whether outpatients had to be moved.

Epsom and St Helier hospital tweeted shortly after noon: "We can confirm that the fire brigade have completed their investigation at Epsom Hospital and there was not a fire.  Evacuation stood down."

"We can confirm that no inpatients were evacuated and the hospital is now running as normal.

"Early reports suggest smoke from the hospital's boiler room may have accidentally entered the main building and triggered the fire alarm."

The hospital has thanked its staff for their calm handling of the situation and apologised to visitors for any inconvenience.

The Epsom Guardian’s photographer, Chris Gray, said he could see "no evidence of any activity whatsoever".

He added there were no fire engines at the scene and no signs of people having been evacuated.

Messages posted on Twitter earlier this morning stated that an evacuation had taken place and the hospital tweeted at 11.45 am: "We can confirm that the fire brigade are currently dealing with a suspected fire at #Epsom Hospital.

"Affected buildings have been evacuated."

Despite the suspected fire, outpatients were advised to attend their appointments as planned.

Five fire engines are believed to be at the hospital now but its press team still cannot confirm which parts of the building have been evacuated.

The hospital trust tweeted at 11.50am: "We would ask people to attend outpatients as planned.  Advice will be given on arrival."
