A traditional fish and chip shop expected to ‘perk up’ Ewell Village has given its first day’s takings to charity.
Epsom and Ewell Mayor Colin Taylor opened the Major Plaice, a 40-seater restaurant and takeaway in the high street, on Wednesday.
The day’s takings went to the mayor’s three charities, which provide equipment, activities and support for young people with disabilities.
Owner Sahin Agirbas said they decided on MERU, Epsom Phab and the Sunnybank Trust after hearing about the great work they do.
Mr Agirbas said: "We thought ‘blimey these are good causes’, we will go for that. We wanted to start with a good deed.
"We are privileged that we are going to be of service to the people in Ewell Village."
Councillor Pamela Bradley said: "It was incredibly good. The mayor was there and it was packed out with visitors.
"Ewell Village is dying away - there are so many empty businesses and I was happy to see this going ahead. It will perk up the village a bit."
Epsom Guardian recently launched the Shine On appeal to help the Sunny Bank Trust, which supports people with learning disabilities in the community, and is campaigning to raise £75,000 for it by next April.
