Popular children’s author Ciaran Murtagh brought a smile to the faces of pupils and staff at a school on World Book Day.
Mr Murtagh, who wrote Dinopants and Genie in Training, led a creative writing session at Banstead Community Junior School on March 7 using ideas such as Prank Powder to spark the children’s imaginations.
Each year group created their own funny and unique story.
One youngster at the school in the Horseshoe, Banstead said afterwards: "It was really fun and exciting.
"Ciaran made everything we said into a funny story."
Pupils were also invited to dress up as their favourite book characters for the day. Among the most popular choices were the Gingerbread Man, the Cat in the Hat and Pippi Longstocking.
Harry Potter fans dressed as witches and wizards from Hogwarts, the fictional school of magic.
School governors and parents joined in too, reading their favourite childhood books to the children including Aesop’s fable, the Boy Who Cried Wolf to Macavity the Mystery Cat by T.S. Eliot.
The teacher heading the school's literacy programme, Rebecca Bendall, said: "The idea is to encourage and inspire children to read stories they may not have heard of - and encourage their interest in reading something new."
