A hairdressing student had her head shaved yesterday to support kidney patients.

Abbé Fisher, 20, has managed to raise more than a thousand pounds by promising to have her hair cut off in the college canteen.

Ms Fisher, who goes to North East Surrey College of Technology (Nescot) in Ewell, has donated the money to the renal unit at St Helier's Hospital in Sutton.

She will give the hair to a wig making company that works with chemotherapy and alopecia patients.

The night before the haircut, Ms Fisher said: "I'm thinking about how I'm going to have no hair in 24 hours.

"I'm a little bit nervous. I have always said that I would have my head shaved and now seemed as good a time as any."

The fundraiser, which also includes a raffle and collection, runs alongside the students' apprenticeship week.

Michele Longhurst, from Nescot, said: "They are an inspiring group of students and it is both a privilege and a pleasure to teach them."
