A schoolgirl reading in the shower was one of the winners of an extreme reading competition.

Sophie Wiggly, in year three, won after more than 60 students at Banstead Community Junior School took photos of themselves in unusual places.

Sam Mead, in year four, also won for a picture of himself reading while playing Twister and the winner in year six was Sam Geldard.

The last winner Rose Hammond, in year five, had roped herself up and read Daisy and the Trouble with Kittens by Kes Gray.

Other entries included reading while sitting on top of a post box and flipping over.

Teacher Miss Bendall said: "I was so impressed with the response from the children.

"It has really encouraged and enthused them to read more.

"We had so many photos in extreme and interesting places ranging from horse riding backwards to reading on an ironing board."

The winners from each year were announced in assembly on January 18 and won a Roald Dahl book.
