A key theme of Chris Grayling's successful election campaign seemed to focus on his role as a local MP and a champion of Epsom and Ewell's interests - we all learnt that he shops in the Ashley Centre, and takes a train to work.

On May 17, the chairman of the Local Government Association - which represents 375 councils, the majority of which are Conservative-led - wrote to the Observer to warn George Osborne of the devastating impact of austerity measures and further cuts to council funding, stating "vital services, such as collecting bins, filling potholes and caring for the elderly, would struggle to continue at current levels", and warning that council services may not survive over the next few years.

Mr Grayling has an influential role in the Government. It is now time to test his commitment to Epsom and Ewell, and see if he will heed the warnings of Conservative councillors and seek to influence George Osborne's fiscal plans and help save our local services.

I truly hope Mr Grayling will strive to serve his constituents' interests, and not those of his party.
