London Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay is following the same blueprint for success that landed Surrey the Clydesdale Bank 40 Trophy this season.

Chairman David Hughes officially announced the club’s return to its former name on Tuesday after a five-season spell as Harlequins RL, ending speculation on the future identity of the London club.

Mackay was in charge at Surrey between 2008 and 2010, helping lay the ground work for LV= County Championship Division Two promotion this summer, before his switch to Quins RL – now the Bronco’s – last year.

He was responsible for appointing cricket manager Chris Adams and overhauling the playing staff to place an emphasis on the development of home grown and young talent.

Mackay, who also unveiled a complete new look for the club following close consultation with fans and players, had previously helped Sussex – with Adams as captain at the time – to dominate domestic cricket and is out to repeat that success in rugby league.

And the straight-talking Zimbabwean insisted there was no real secret to his success, pointing out it could easily be replicated at the Broncos over the next three-years of its Super League licence period.

“There is no magic ingredient to what is achievable,” he said.

“We had to start from scratch at Surrey and I’m delighted for Chris that he is now delivering on what we set out to achieve.

“You have to go through the formal prcoesses of getting the right people in with the right processes to go with it.

“It is not rocket science and it can be done here.”
