Hersham’s Sam Bird is looking forward to a fast start for Formula E racing on home soil.

Wandsworth Council gave the the green light for Battersea Park to host the final two rounds of this season’s debut Formula E Series last week in a move that could see more than 60,000 race fans line the 2,92km circuit.

Bird is currently second in the driver standings after four rounds with the fifth round scheduled for March 14 in Miami.

It means the 28-year-old could be fighting it out for the title come June 27 when the series visits London.

The track is right next to the River Thames and has some of the most famous features of London’s skyline in the background,” he said, “The layout itself combines fast straights, a couple of high-speed bends, as well as some challenging chicanes and braking zones.

“I think spectators will see some close, fast racing with plenty of action and overtaking. The organisers have done a good job with this layout and I can’t wait to race there, in front of my home crowd.”
