Dons clinch dramatic promotion

Two late goals took AFC Wimbledon into Blue Square South after a dramatic match at Staines Town yesterday.

It was tough on Staines who dominated most of the match and took a first-half header from Matt Flitter.

It wasn't until the 83rd minute that Dons grabbed an equaliser in controversial fashion.

Dons striker Jon Main appeared to barge into Staines keeper James Courtnage and, as the keeper fell, the ball ran free for Luis Cumbers to lash home.

Shellshocked Staines were on their knees and Dons took full advantage three minutes later when Mark DeBolla fired a superb 25-yard free kick into the bottom corner.

Reaction from both camps to follow on this website.

It was a much deserved win from the Dons after Stains' goalscorer should have been sent off anyway before scoring their only goal. The Dons were all over them in the 2nd half and a goal was inevitable. There were a few controversial moments, but it was tit-for-tat and they easily canceled each other out. Come on the Dons!!

Biased as I may be I can't agreed that 'Staines dominated most of the match'. I counted 3 good chances for us to go ahead before they scored. There were 10 minute spells either side of half time when we might have gone further behind but we got stronger as the 2nd half went on. There was really only one team in it at the end and I thought it was a very comfortable last 10 mins + 4 overtime as Staines appeared to have nothing left.

It was Staines captain Flitter that obstructed their keeper, the ball fell to Wimbledon's McDonnell, not Main and Luis Cumbers didn't 'lash it in' as it was a header! The final score was correct though and that's all that matters.
