Wallington’s British Paralympic legend David Weir is keeping his Rio 2016 targets close to his chest, but he has his eye firmly on retaining the T54 marathon title.
The 36-year-old completed his preparations for the Paralympics with a third place finish in an incident-filled T54 1,500m in the Muller London Anniversary Games on Saturday.
His time of three minutes 19.92 seconds, just saw him miss out to his great rival from Switzerland Marcel Hug, won a tight finish down the home straight in 3:19.73.
Weir was fortunate to miss a crash halfway through the race, however, he admitted it affected his race.
He said: “The crash happened just behind me, and it actually hit me so it put me off a little bit.
“But to be honest I’m still in the heavy phase of training at the moment, I’m focusing on those 10 days in Rio so what happened today happened.
"I’m more worried about Rio.”
And Weir, who will be doing five events come Games time at the Brazilian beach samba city, is hoping to add a few more golds to the four he won in London 2012.
However, he added: “I’ll be happy with a medal. To be honest I really want to do well in the marathon again so a lot of the training is based around that.”
