Land of hope and glory: Molesey Boat Club members cheer on club captain Andrew Triggs Hodge and Tom James at the club's Barge Walk base in East Molesey
Molesey Boat Club have never had it so good and are set to honour the club’s record-breaking London 2012 Olympic medal haul.
Graburn Way stars Greg Searle, Moe Sbihi, James Foad and George Nash all claimed bronze medals at the London 2012 regatta last week in the men’s eight and men’s pairs.
Club skipper Andrew Triggs Hodge and clubmate Tom James added the coup de gras as the pair helped the Team GB men’s four win gold at Eton Dorney, as the nation celebrated six Olympic titles in 24
hours on Super Saturday.
Yorkshireman Tom Ransley, who names York City as his club, rowed for Molesey for nine months and secured bronze in the men’s eight.
And it left club secretary Ted Bates to claim the seven-medal collection was the club’s best in its 146-year history.
“Of course, we have had medallists before, but it is safe to say this is the best ever haul we have had in one Olympics,” said the club secretary.
“We are just updating our honours board and with Tom having rowed for us in the past, we are claiming seven medals.
“We’ve had a bit of a barren spell, but as far as I can remember it has never been as good as that before.”
The Molesey contingent – including Cameron Nicholl, who was named as first men’s heavyweight reserve for the 2012 Games – will be acclaimed at a club celebration in September mirroring the
red carpet treatment their Olympians received after the Beijing Games four years ago.
“We’ve already flagged up the idea with Hodgey,” said Bates.
“The last time we did it was great and we’ll be looking to do something similar. It will be a bit of a rush and there might be some problems with holidays, but we hope to have all of them at the
club in a couple of weeks time.
“We still have some red carpet so we’ve got to use it.”
