Surbiton trio tim for first Olympic cut

Surbiton Hockey Club’s James Tindall, Richard Alexander and Rob Moore are out to impress as Team GB men’s hockey squad host the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament – doubling up as the Olympic Test Event – at the Olympic Park this week.

Great Britain, who inherit England’s fourth placed world ranking for the Games, lost 3-1 to second-ranked Germany on Wednesday and were due to play 10th-ranked India last night.

The round-robin section of the event concludes on Saturday with a clash against world number ones Australia, before Sunday’s final and third-place play-off.

The current 27-man squad must be trimmed to 16 for the Olympics and head coach Jason Lee admitted a lot was riding on this week’s Test Event.

“This is a run of four games against high quality opposition that provides a great challenge,” he said.

“We will be going into each game focused on winning that game. Simply put though, the clue is in the title of the tournament, the Test Event.”

Team GB finish preparations for the Olympics when they go to the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia later this month on May 24.
