Corinthian Casuals had their own make or break occasion on Saturday – and it couldn’t have been much more heartbreaking.

The Brazilian fan who travelled 6,000 miles can hardly have watched a game in a more breathtaking setting than the play-off final at Dorking Wanderers, but sadly a 0-0 draw on a bumpy pitch was followed by agony of defeat in a penalty shoot-out.

Dave Hodges, in his 300th game for Casuals saw the decisive penalty saved by Slav Huk, whose superb goalkeeping, more than anything else, had preserved the deadlock during the match.

Wanderers may have gone from a park team to the Ryman Premier League thanks to 10 promotions in 18 seasons.

But, make no mistake, in terms of finances they were anything but underdogs against the amateur Casuals.

If manager James Bracken can keep his team together, who would bet against Casuals going one better next season?
