Rather than let their Surrey Championship Division One season fizzle out, Malden Wanderers skipper James Wackett is excited about the prospect of a strong finish to the campaign.

Wanderers were humbled by eight wickets at home by promotion chasing Spencer on Saturday after Jon Speller claimed 6-58 sent the hosts tumbling for just 99 all out.

Andrew Mawson’s 53-ball unbeaten 50 and Shah Zaib Hassan Khan’s 34 not out – which featured five sixes – saw Spencer home.

Wanderers have lost their past four games to slip out of the promotion race and Wackett wants better in the campaign’s remaining six matches.

“The wicket gave the seamers a lot of assistance. Spencer exploited the conditions very well and we were unable to counter the pressure they built,” he said.

“Four weeks ago we said the next four weeks would define our season against the top three sides.

“Unfortunately we’ve come up short, but we had opportunities in two of those games.

“The last six games are really important and we need to get back to winning ways. It’s an exciting prospect.”
