There was an evening of celebration at Glyn School when students and guests were invited to enjoy a full spectrum of creative arts.

Epsom and Ewell Mayor and consort Elizabeth and Christopher Frost were among those who arrived at the school to see a full range of the arts from poetry to comedy on Wednesday, June 14.

A huge array of GCSE artwork was on display in the Proctor Hall and guests were encouraged to wander and enjoy the exhibition. Design Technology coursework was also on show in the hall and head teacher Philip Wheatley said the pieces had “showed huge imagination, precision and skill.”

The Junior Drama Club performed a comedy while poetry readings were given by students and refreshment, by way of hand-made canapes, was provided by pupils studying Food Preparation and Nutrition.

The English department at Glyn School holds a poetry competition each year in memory of a former teacher, Tony Cooper, and the six winning students all read their pieces to the guests during the event.

“Their work showed great maturity and passion,” said Mr Wheatley, who added that gift tokens were presented by the Mayor to the winners during the evening.

It was also the first time that A-level artwork could be displayed in the Turner Wing which was previously home to the school’s sixth-form and latterly staff from the GLF Trust, of which Glyn School is a member. The setting, with light flooding in, made a perfect backdrop for the collection. “The standard of work was phenomenally high,” said Mr Wheatley.

Great summer weather also saw music students able to take their instruments outside and perform for guests during the evening.

“Congratulations to all the students who performed on the night, prefects who helped throughout the evening and to the staff who do so much to showcase our talented students. The event was a true celebration of Glyn Arts.”
