Some 250 people gathered at the Royal Automobile Club in Woodcote Park yesterday to wish good luck to the borough’s Surrey Youth Games team. They included the many of the competitors, their parents and their coaches.

The free reception provided by the Club was the only opportunity for all of ‘Team Epsom and Ewell’ to come together before the Games this weekend. Among the speakers was Club member and former British number one ladies tennis player Sam Smith, who talked to the children about the fun of competing and the value of teamwork.

Over the past month, the Club’s professional coaching staff have also been training 45 local children in squash, tennis and swimming in preparation for the Games.
