Residents and staff at Sunrise of Banstead care home celebrated VE Day in style on 8th May, hosting a charity tea party packed with great entertainment and delicious food.

Guests enjoyed a live performance from Julie Burnette while being served a full afternoon tea, featuring mouth-watering finger sandwiches, fresh cakes, and scones with clotted cream and jam.

The event was held to honour Victory in Europe Day, which marked the anniversary of Germany’s surrender during the Second World War.

Guests listened to Winston Churchill’s famous VE Day speech from 8th May 1945, and were joined by the leader of the local Air Cadets and one of the community’s carers who is a Combat Medic for the Army Reserves.

There are a number of veterans among the community’s residents, and guests were visibly moved when one former soldier described his memories of VE Day, and the fact that no shots had been fired for three days by that time.

A raffle raised £63.52 for the Help for Heroes charity, which provides support and facilities for British servicemen and women who have been injured in the line of duty.

The VE Day celebrations are just one example of the wide-ranging array of activities that Sunrise of Banstead hosts throughout the year, which encourage residents to live active, fulfilling lives.

Sunrise communities across the UK offer personalised care to residents focused on individual needs, including dementia care, assisted living and nursing.

Suzanne Spurgin, General & Registered Manager at Sunrise of Banstead, said:

“Our charity tea party on VE Day was a wonderful way to honour the servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much for our country, and raise money for the great cause of Help for Heroes.

“Such events give residents the chance to socialise with one another, discuss the past, and enjoy great live entertainment and delicious food.

“We look forward to many more events like this in future, and will continue to support magnificent charities such as Help for Heroes as much as possible.”
