Alzheimer’s Society in Surrey is encouraging residents to unite against dementia and become a Dementia Friend this Dementia Awareness Week (14-21 May). There will be a free 45-minute interactive Dementia Friends Information Session on Tuesday 16th May at 11.00 at Rosebery Manor, 458 Reigate Road, Epsom Downs KT18 5XA. Call 01737 364605 to book your place.

Dementia Friends was launched in February 2013 by Alzheimer’s Society. It is a trailblazing initiative that aims to help people understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action. Already more than 1.9 million people have become Dementia Friends across the country.

Debbie Self, The Dementia Friends Champion hosting this session at Rosebery Manor Care and Nursing Home said:

‘I became a Champion just over a year ago following the death of my father who had dementia. I witnessed first hand how having a little knowledge of dementia can help people working in restaurants, banks, shops etc make life easier for people living with dementia and their families.’

‘Dementia can affect a person’s relationships and their connection to the world they love, leaving them feeling isolated and alone. By becoming a Dementia Friend you can help keep people connected to their lives and people who matter most.’

This year, Alzheimer’s Society is asking people to come together to unite against dementia, forgetting their differences to help urgently find a cure, improve care, and offer help and understanding during Dementia Awareness Week.

Dementia doesn’t care who you are; it could affect us all. It’s set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes, and so many people are facing it alone.
People with dementia often feel – and are – misunderstood, marginalised and isolated but with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives and make a contribution to their communities. So, unite with us now and join us on Tuesday 16th May. Places are limited so please call Debbie on  01737 364605 to book.

Alzheimer’s Society is here for anyone affected by dementia. The charity provides information and support, to find out more call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 or visit alzheimers.org.uk/DAW
