This week staff at NHS Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group have been supporting The Eve Appeal’s ‘Make Time for Tea’ campaign to raise awareness, and money, in aid of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian is the fifth most common cancer amongst women in the UK with over 7,300 women diagnosed each year, and 11 dying each day. However, “if diagnosed early women have a five-year survival rate of around 90%” report The Eve Appeal.

With 8 March also representing International Women’s Day, it’s important to raise awareness about the early signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

These include:

- Pain in pelvis or abdomen
- Increased abdominal size/persistent bloating
- Feeling full early/and or lack of appetite
- Urinary symptoms (urge to urinate more frequently)

Chief Nurse, Eileen Clark at NHS Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group said:

“We know that ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths in the UK than all of the other gynaecological cancers put together.  With International Women’s Day taking place this week, our focus has been  on  raising awareness about the early signs of ovarian cancer and encouraging women to see their GP if they regularly experience any of the symptoms, which can include pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, a lack of appetite and urinary problems.”
