Pupils from Ewell Castle Preparatory and Senior School this week (8-9th February 2017) performed the ever-popular British musical Bugsy Malone during three sell-out audiences at the Epsom Playhouse.

Roles for the production, which followed on from Oliver last year, were hotly contested amongst pupils from Year 6 to Year 13 (upper sixth) and demonstrate just how far the School has come in a year in developing all aspects of performing arts.

This year’s show included numbers such as “I’m feeling fine”, “Down and Out” and “You give a little love”, as well as the show stopper “Fat Sam’s Grand Slam” in which the “Speakeasy” stage came alive with a fun rendition of a “Charleston” dance performed by over 15 girls wearing shimmering purple dresses. However, the boys were not to be out dressed or outnumbered on stage, wearing stylish 1920’s inspired pinstriped suits, many of them were clearly relishing the prospect of using the infamous “splurge guns” and foam during some of the key scenes.

Principal Harris commented “I am very proud of what our pupils and staff have achieved in just five weeks of rehearsals and I particularly like the inclusive approach to all our productions, which provide our pupils with the opportunity to either perform on the stage, as part of the show band or as part of the backstage crew.” He continued, “We have managed to create a genuine desire amongst our pupils to be involved in performing arts and none of them now want to miss out on the chance of being a part of the next production.”
