On Wednesday 21st December, the staff and members of Longmead Social Centre in Epsom had the privilege of celebrating the 100th birthday of a remarkable lady.

Ms Evelyn Irwin of West Ewell attended Longmead Centre for one of a number of parties held in her honour during that week. An ingenious an lively centenarian, Evelyn, visits Longmead Centre several times a week in order to socialise with her friends, take part in activities and visit the hairdressing salon.

Ms Irwin is still as meticulous about her appearance now as she was in 1936, when at the age of 20, along with her family, arrived in Epsom to start a tobacconist business in East Street.

Soon after her arrival, at the break of World War II, Evelyn joined the WRENS and a little later, GCHQ.

Even at the age of 100 Evelyn is still socially very active, taking advantage of day excursions offered by the Council's Route Call service and also other exciting theatre visits with "Magic Moments".

When asked about her secret to a healthy and long life, Evelyn is quick to reply "if you want something have it".

The staff and the membership of Longmead Centre would like, once again, to wish Evelyn a very happy, healthy and busy 100th birthday.
