A charity that supports ex-servicemen and women celebrates its 90th anniversary this year.

Volunteers from the Lest We Forget Association made their annual street collection in Cobham, Epsom, Ashtead, Banstead and Burgh Heath in May, raising £3,649 for their funds.

From August 1914 until after the end of WWI, more than 2,655,000 British and Commonwealth sick and wounded returned from the battlefields of France.

Volunteers, who initially handed out tea, chocolate and tobacco to the ambulance troop trains, decided that a more long-term commitment to these troops, whose lives had been shattered, was needed.

Inviting groups of these lonely patients out to tea concerts was seen as the beginning of the charity’s work. Now in its 90th year, it still carries on the commitment formed after WWI.
