New look for Epsom station revealed
1:22pm Wednesday 27th June 2012 in News Exclusive By Hardeep Matharu
The new look station will contain artwork capturing the faces of Epsom
The new face, or faces, of Epsom station were revealed by developers this week.
A new ticket office and ticket machines have opened, alongside a new station concourse and decorated subway.
But these are just the first elements of a radical new look for the station used by thousands of people each day.
As part of the planning agreement for the development with Epsom and Ewell Council, developers Solum Regeneration agreed to incorporate public art chosen from a competition of students at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom (UCA).
The winner, Nick Jameson, has developed a concept called The People of Epsom which uses a stylised likeness of local people and their tributes to the community.
Mr Jameson, who graduated with a Graphic Design degree from UCA in 2011, ran a stand in Epsom town centre last year giving residents the chance to sign up to his project.
His pieces, capturing a number of different faces representing Epsom, will adorn the outside of the station.
Mr Jameson, 23, from Newport, said: "It is an amazing opportunity.
"Epsom has been a huge part of my life in the last few years so it will be great to leave my mark on its history.
"The artwork is for the people of Epsom which is why I want to incorporate the faces and opinions of those connected with the town.
"Hopefully there will be a good response."
Peter Hughes, of Solum Regeneration, said: "We are delighted with Nick’s art work, as it really encompasses the community and creates a unique buzz around our development.
"Epsom and Ewell Council have always been keen to see a major art project as part of this development and the more this initiative has progressed the more exciting it has become."
Councillor Graham Dudley, chairman of the planning committee, added: "The council has been closely involved with the evolution of the art competition and the winning concept.
"The idea behind this was part of the original planning permission."
The controversial redevelopment of Epsom station is due for completion by the end of 2012 and will provide a new station, homes, a hotel and a local convenience store.

So, Tesco managed to get into Epsom eh? Just shows how much the local council listens to local people.
No amount of artwork would improve this blot on the landscape of, what was, our beautiful town, Epsom.
Shame on all those who passed through this planning design.

However, I do feel for the people in Horsley Close, as this is a pretty imposing structure.
As for Tesco... are they involved, or is this simply a logo used to make the artist's impression more realistic? If they are opening a store, it'd be a shame, as there's a perfectly good Co-op over the road. A station merely needs a good newsagent, cafe and pub, not more bland retail opportunities.

s ticket hall is so much nicer than the old one. Clearly the entrance could not have been moved to the corner, as this would have resulted in a lost of commerical ground floor space to enable passengers to get from the original platform position (which cant be moved, as it is inline with the train platforms), all the way to the corner, where Travelodge is going to be. This would be totally impractical. The new entrance canopy soon to go up, over the main station entrance will be a nice feature/focal point. Whilst I personally feel the height could have been lower, the design and style of the building is very modern and fresh. Being out of view from the high street, I think it is important for Architecture to evolve. The choice of the two colour bricks works well, (although perhaps they could have used a classic red colour with the cream), with the slim brick detail creating a design feature and the staggered sections and use of glass. I live near by and am pleased with how it is shaping up. I do not think it looks anything like a 60's 70's tower block....??? they were built on the quick with no thought about design and the future. This is a building development which is an architectural achievement. Once complete, I am sure it will become a hub point and I am sure it will be accepted by even the doubters.. It will certainley put Epsom on the map with its new 'modern' station. All we need now is for Epsom to be in Zone 6!
I have seen the poster image which shows a Tesco and Costa. Whilst it would have been better for the town to perhaps have a small Sainsbury's local, the addition of a small supermaket shop, which I guess will open til 11pm, will be a bonus for commuters traveling home late in the evenings.

Sadly though, this might impact quite badly on the small Co-op across the road.
