A dedicated charity worker was treated to a VIP Epsom Derby Day experience.

Wendy Girouard, from Redhill, was deemed the worthy winner of The Ashley Centre’s Derby Experience competition and enjoyed a makeover, new outfit and a visit to the Derby.

David Beddows, manager of the Epsom town centre shopping mall, said: "We were looking to reward a commendable individual and when Wendy’s nomination came in the judging panel all agreed she was the most worthy recipient."

Ms Girouard has worked for more than 20 years on behalf of The Compassionate Friends, a charity for parents who have suffered the loss of a child.

She herself lost her only son and runs a regular meeting group at her home where parents can share their experiences and feel less alone in their grief.

As part of the treat, Ms Girouard was taken around House of Fraser with a personal shopper to choose her outfit and accessories.

On Derby Day she had her hair done at Regis Hair Salon before enjoying an Elizabeth Arden facial and makeover in House of Fraser.

Ms Girouard then watched the world’s richest horse race from the Grandstand at Epsom Downs Racecourse.
