Firefighters from Leatherhead were called to a dishwasher fire yesterday.

The crew were called to Spring Grove, Fetcham, at about 9.45pm.

A spokesman said: "On arrival there was smoke coming off the dishwasher as the elderly couple living there had attempted to put out the fire themselves."

The damaged dishwasher was removed from the property, but firefighters noted there was also damage to the kitchen worktop it had been under.

The couple were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
