A Doctor Who-obsessed reverend who wants to make the church more appealing to young people has joined Epsom Methodist Church (EMC).

Rev Nick Oborski, the church’s new minister, is an avid fan of the TV series, featuring time lord The Doctor, currently played by Matt Smith.

On a message to the congregation, Rev Oborski wrote: “I am not proposing Dalek's rising from under the church floor - but are there new ways of being church? What would encourage more 20 to 40-year-olds to come to the church building and to engage with God? We need to look at such issues and wonder if we could dare to be different.”

He moved to Epsom with his wife and children and joined the Methodist Church following a period of ministry at Knaphill and Addlestone Methodist Churches.

Rev Oborski said: “The building at EMC really is like the Tardis, there is a fantastic huge open plan worship space and a variety of meeting rooms which you wouldn’t realise were there from the outside.

“It’s a very busy church community already with many clubs, groups and meetings happening throughout the week – as well as four Sunday services. I plan to build on what we already have to make the church even more vibrant.”

As viewers of the new Doctor Who series hit record heights Rev Oborski believes that similar growth in spiritual matters is happening.

The minister said he sees a parallel between Doctor Who and the church, “which seeks to present God to the younger generation”.

He said: "Both are exciting, deal with issues of life, the value of people and offer hope."
