Pensioner jailed for smuggling heroin into Highdown prison

A pensioner who smuggled heroin into a prison has been jailed for two years.

Robert White, 68, from Chiselhurst Road, Orpington, admitted taking 14g of the class A drug into Highdown Prison, Banstead, in December last year.

Surrey Police was called to Highdown on December 16 after White was seen by prison officers passing something to a prisoner he was visiting.

Following a search, a package was found containing the drug.

White was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on March 3 after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Dave Evans, who investigated the incident, said: “White thought he was above the law and he would get away with smuggling drugs into one of Her Majesty’s prisons.

”I hope his sentence sends a clear message to anyone thinking of smuggling or dealing drugs that Surrey Police will not tolerate drug abuse and we are cracking down hard on the illegal use and supply of drugs.

“Working with HMP service we were able to bring White to justice and the sentence reflects the seriousness Surrey Police and the courts are taking against those who choose to deal or use drugs.

"I hope White’s sentence reassures the community that we will continue to target drug users and dealers and prosecute them.”
