Six councillors could be scrapped and local communities will get to choose who is ‘us’ and ‘them’ in a new ward boundary consultation.

The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking residents for help drawing up a new map of council wards for Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.

The consultation is the first part of an electoral review which will re-draw ward boundaries across the borough.

Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the commission, said: “We will take into account local community identities as well as ensuring electoral equality for voters.

“If you have a view about which communities or neighbourhoods should be part of the same council ward, then we want to hear from you.

“And if you think a road, river or railway makes for a strong boundary between communities in your part of Reigate and Banstead, then this consultation is for you.”

The commission announced that Reigate and Banstead should have 45 councillors in future: six fewer than the current arrangements.

Local people have until April 9, 2018, to submit their views by emailing reviews@lgbce.org.uk or writing to:
