Five women from Teddington have pedalled across London to complete a charity cycle-lido challenge begun in 2017.

The women cycled to and swam in 13 of the capital's famous lidos, raising £3,500 for Princess Alice Hospice along the way.

They completed their mission at the newly reopened London Fields Lido in Hackney.

Beth Ridgley a Partnership fundraiser for PAH, which provides end of life care for adults, said, “the groups’ fundraising efforts over the last year have been absolutely incredible.’

The fit five - Sally King, Cathy Woodall, Dianne Wesson, Charlotte Duff and Fiona Mackenzie - all in their 50s have collectively cycled 2,900km and swum 36km. Cold water Lidos visited, where the water temperature has in some instances been a challenging 16°C include: Brockwell, Hillingdon and Hampstead Heath Ladies ponds.

Camden’s London Oasis, a warm water lido like the London Fields Lido, got the thumbs up last February during freezing conditions and a snow flurry. The swim was warmer than the cycle.

Asked why she had accepted the challenge, which was her friend Sally King’s idea, Cathy Woodall said: "I love to step outside my comfort zone and love an adventure."

She added: "The whole idea appealed as it was a specific and finite adventure that could be completed – had it not been for the delayed re-opening of the Hackney lido - within a year."

According to Beth Ridgley at PAH: "£2,000 raised by the challenge will pay for 29 visits to a patient a home by a Princess Alice Nurse or 57 hours of night nursing care to a patient at home."
