New government figures released yesterday show the progress made by secondary school pupils in Epsom and Ewell.

This “Progress 8” score reflects the difference between the results SATs taken in year nine and results from GCSEs and other key stage four qualifications.

It takes into account up to eight qualifications, with greater weight placed on English and maths results because of their importance.

The top-scoring school in the area was Nonsuch High School for Girls which achieved 1.15

Amy Cavilla, headteacher of Nonsuch High School for girls said: “We are delighted to get one of the highest Progress 8 scores in the country.

"The students deserve this recognition for their hard work and commitment, supported by their parents and our expert and dedicated staff add tremendous value on top of that, of which I am very proud.

"We are particularly pleased with how well students fared in the new English and Maths GCSEs.”

Scores of 0.5 and above reflect well above average progress, roughly in the top 12 per cent; above zero but below 0.5 is above average, in the top 30 per cent; around zero is average.

Schools with a score under zero might still have shown improvements; it just shows they made less progress than most other schools in the country.

Here is a breakdown of how schools in Epsom and Ewell ranked:

Nonsuch High School for Girls 1.15

St Andrew's Catholic School 0.87

Rosebery School 0.61

Glyn School 0.05
