Unemployment rose by 20 per cent in Epsom and Ewell in the last twelve months, bucking the trend from the past few years.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that despite the number of Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants falling by 54 per cent since five years ago, there was an increase in the year up to August 17.

Unemployment among 18 to 24-year-olds has reduced, though, with 8 per cent fewer claimants than a year ago and a 68 per cent reduction in the last five years.

The Department for Work and Pensions hailed the record high 75.3 per cent employment rate nationwide, with unemployment at its lowest rate since 1975.

Epsom Jobcentre is holding a jobs fair on September 27, with plenty of general vacancies as well as temporary Christmas roles available.
