The family of an Epsom man whose disappearance sparked a mass volunteer effort from the public have staged a reconstruction to jog people’s memories four weeks after he went missing.

James Middleton, known as Jim, was last seen exactly a month ago – at noon on Sunday, July 2 – when he went out on his light blue mobility scooter heading towards the Stew Ponds and Christ Church Road area.

Despite police helicopters being scrambled and officers and hundreds of volunteers scouring the area (pictured above), the 70-year-old has still not been found.

On Sunday (July 30) his brother Keith Middleton rode around Epsom Common on a scooter the same colour and model as James’ following the same routes James normally used.

James’ cousin Lisa McCool streamed the reconstruction via Facebook Live on a group, Find James Middleton, which has nearly 2,000 members at the time of writing. She said: “We’re just as stumped as everybody else. We just can’t think of a scenario that is feasible.

“It’s totally bizarre.”

She added that while spreading awareness of James’ disappearance the family had met “an awful lot of people” who thought he had been found or who had not heard of her cousin’s case.

Lisa offered the following advice to people about how best to assist the search: “Just keep sharing.

“Somebody has got to come across this scooter somewhere. Someone has to know something.”

Jim is described as white, five feet six inches tall, of large build, and with brown greying hair. He was last seen wearing a body warmer, dark grey shorts, blue trainers, and white socks, and was riding his four-wheeled, light blue mobility scooter.

Sergeant Eddie Alderley of Epsom and Ewell Neighbourhood Team had previously advised residents to keep an eye out for Jim and his scooter (pictured below) – a light blue, four-wheeled Breeze model TGA scooter, with the serial number 1042039.

He added that people should “look a bit further afield” while out walking in the borough.
