The curtain came down on the annual panto held at the Epsom Playhouse on Sunday.

And organisers are hailing last year’s production as the “best ever” that was held in the town.

Aladdin, that starred Boom! Heavy D, of Storage Hunters and Celebrity Big Brother fame, was well received by critics and the thousands of people who attended the shows over the festive period.

There were 4,950 transactions selling 14,718 tickets welcoming more than 17,500 people over three-and a half weeks – not bad for a theatre that holds just over 400 people.

The first tickets were sold on March 23 last year and the last ticket was purchased was on January 8.

Inside the auditorium more than 8,500 ice creams were sold during the intervals.

An Epsom and Ewell Borough Council spokesman said: “We revised and updated marketing and advertising strategies and made sure we were able to reach and in some cases target neighbouring towns such as Sutton, Cheam, Wallington, Banstead, Chessington, Leatherhead and Dorking as well as Epsom and Ewell.”

One excited youngster said after watching the panto on the second last day: “The show was brilliant.

“I really enjoyed the singing and the dancing. I loved the different costumes the dame wore.

“And I really loved the genie who kept on saying ‘Boom’ every time he came on stage.

“And Wishy Washy was wonderful too. I enjoyed doing the hand signals and ‘Dab’ every time he appeared. It was wonderful and I am looking forward to this year’s.”
