Almost no Southern trains are running as three days of strike action begins across the network.

Commuters are facing fresh disruption today as members of the Aslef union walk out over a long-running dispute about driver-only trains.

Passengers have been told to avoid travelling if possible while the action takes place today, tomorrow and on Friday.

Southern said it ran a handful of trains from Brighton to London early in the morning, driven by driver/managers, and planned to operate eight trains in each direction in the morning and during peak hours between Caterham and the capital.

These trains are driver-only operated.

But the company normally operates more than 2,200 trains a day, carrying 300,000 passengers.

Buses and coaches were laid on but hundreds of thousands of people could not get to work.

This follows a day of travel chaos caused by yesterday's tube strike.

Further Southern strikes are planned later this month on January 24, 25 and 27.
