A festive family is hoping to light up Christmas for a brave boy battling cerebral palsy with charity donations outside their illuminated house.

The Facey family of Chessington Road, Epsom, have once again decorated their house with bright lights depicting Father Christmas, reindeer, snowmen and women, robins and other yuletide characters and creatures.

In previous years, Steve, 47, Carla, 35, Freddie, 10, Sammy, 6, and Finlay, 2, have held collections for charity outside their front garden.

This year they are raising money for handicapped Harry Stanesby, 3, from Stoneleigh, whose family are hoping to raise £20,000 towards life-changing trips to a physiotherapy clinic in Toronto, Canada.

The family heard about Harry’s case through the Epsom Guardian and formed a close bond with the Stanesby family after being introduced through mutual friends.

“We liked the fact that he was local and that his parents are trying to self-fundraise a lot of money,” Carla explained.

“We’ve since met up with them a few times, and I would like to think we will be staying in contact for a long time.”

Last year, the Facey family raised about £1,250 for Surrey Sands, which helps and supports bereaved parents affected by the loss of a baby, and hope to raise even more for Harry this year.

They unveiled this year’s lights at a switch-on event attended by “well over 100 people” on Thursday, December 1.

“We really enjoy it and our children really enjoy it,” Carla said.

“We have a new little penguin which is quite nice.

“The kids like the little garden too. They can pick out their favourites.

“The Santa in the window is very popular. Someone knocked on the door to ask about him last night.

“It’s hard to pick a favourite though.”

She added: “We had quite a lot of people asking when they will be turned on.

“I think it’s expected now.”

The Stanesbys’ fundraising appeal to help Harry (pictured above), who was born with an upper motor neuron lesion in his brain that causes him difficulty moving, and which comes under the broad umbrella of cerebral palsy, recently reached £15,000.

Mark Stanesby said this has helped them to book the next trip to the Health in Motion clinic in Toronto a rehabilitation clinic that provides specialized treatments for children with cerebral palsy, developmental delay, acquired brain injury, and paediatric stroke.

The family will be flying out to Canada in March.

“We’ve had a lot of help from people. It’s been amazing,” he said.

“It’s quite humbling the number of people, we don’t even know, but have been coming up to us saying, ‘We’ve seen him in the paper or online’.”

Mark added that the family would be going back to Chessington Road to enjoy the Facey’s lights on Christmas Eve.

“When all of the lights came on (on Thursday) and Harry saw Father Christmas, he was just staring at it,” he said.

“‘How does Father Christmas come down the chimney?’: We get asked that a lot these days.

“We’re having a proper family Christmas day here, and hopefully Harry will have lots of presents.”
